Civil law
Civil law is a legal tradition based on comprehensive written codes, derived ultimately from Roman law. Its foundations lie in the law of the Roman Empire and the Corpus Juris Civilis compiled in the Byzantine Empire. The Napoleonic Code of the French Empire and the Austrian civil code of the Habsburg lands spread the tradition across Europe and beyond.
