Chincha Islands War

1864–1866 · 19th century

The Chincha Islands War was a conflict between Spain and its former colonies Peru and Chile, later joined by Ecuador and Bolivia, from 1864 to 1866. It began when a Spanish squadron seized Peru's guano-rich Chincha Islands. In 1866 the Spanish bombarded the undefended port of Valparaíso and then attacked Callao before withdrawing; a final peace was signed only in the 1870s and 1880s.
