Christian Democracy (Italy)

1943–1994 · 20th century · Also known as Democrazia Cristiana

Christian Democracy was a Catholic, centrist political party that dominated Italian politics from 1946 to 1994, leading or taking part in every government. Under Alcide De Gasperi it anchored Italy in NATO and European integration. It collapsed in the early 1990s amid the Tangentopoli corruption scandals and split into several parties.
