Code Henry

1812 · 19th century

The Code Henry was the legal code issued in 1812 by Henri Christophe for his Kingdom of Haiti in the north of the country. Based largely on French law, it covered civil, commercial, criminal and military matters, and included strict rules binding agricultural labourers to the plantations to keep up export production. It was abandoned after the kingdom fell in 1820.
