Citadelle Laferrière

c. 1805–1820 · 19th century · Also known as Citadelle Henry

The Citadelle Laferrière is a mountaintop fortress near Milot in northern Haiti, built between about 1805 and 1820 by many thousands of workers on the orders of Henri Christophe. It was designed to resist an expected French attempt to reconquer Haiti and was armed with scores of cannon. With the Sans-Souci palace and the Ramiers buildings it forms a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1982.
