A Muslim trading port by the 14th century, it was fortified by the Portuguese in the early 16th century and taken by the Dutch in 1656 and the British in 1796, serving as the colony's capital. The administrative capital, Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, lies on its eastern edge.
