Commewijne River
The Commewijne is a river in north-eastern Suriname that flows into the Suriname River opposite Paramaribo, at the site of Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam. In the colonial period its banks and those of its tributary, the Cottica, were lined with sugar, coffee and cacao plantations worked by enslaved Africans. The surrounding district of Commewijne is named after it.
