1893 · 19th century

The Committee of Safety was a group of 13 mostly American and European businessmen and lawyers in Honolulu who organised the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom in January 1893. Led by Lorrin A. Thurston, it acted after Queen Liliʻuokalani tried to issue a new constitution restoring royal power, and with the support of US marines it proclaimed the Provisional Government of Hawaii under Sanford B. Dole.
