Committee of Togolese Unity

1941 · 20th century · Also known as Comité de l'unité togolaise

The Committee of Togolese Unity was a political party in French Togoland, founded in 1941 as a cultural association and turned into a nationalist party after 1946 under Sylvanus Olympio. It petitioned the United Nations for independence and for the unification of the Ewe people divided between British and French Togoland. It won the UN-supervised elections of 1958, and Olympio led Togo to independence in 1960.
