Commius

1st century BCE · 1st century BCE

Commius was a king of the Atrebates of northern Gaul in the 1st century BCE. Installed by Julius Caesar, he served as Caesar's envoy to the Britons in 55 BCE, but joined Vercingetorix's revolt in 52 BCE and later fled to Britain. Coins suggest he founded a dynasty among the British Atrebates, whose later kings, including Verica, claimed descent from him.
