Concordat of Bologna

1516 · 16th century

The Concordat of Bologna was an agreement made in 1516 between Francis I of France and Pope Leo X after the French victory at Marignano. It gave the French king the right to nominate bishops, abbots and other senior clergy in his kingdom, while the pope received the first year's revenues of these posts. It gave the crown control of the French church until the Revolution.
