Concordat of Worms

1122 · 12th century · Also known as Pactum Calixtinum

The Concordat of Worms was the agreement of September 1122 between Emperor Henry V and Pope Callixtus II that ended the Investiture Controversy. The emperor gave up investing bishops with ring and staff, while in Germany elections were to take place in his presence and he granted the elected bishop the regalia with a sceptre. It was concluded at Worms, one of the leading cities of the Salian emperors.
