Congress of People's Deputies of the Soviet Union
The Congress of People's Deputies of the Soviet Union was the highest body of state power in the USSR from 1989 to 1991, created by Mikhail Gorbachev's reforms. Its elections in March 1989 were the first partly competitive national elections in Soviet history, and its televised debates gave a platform to critics such as Andrei Sakharov and Boris Yeltsin. It dissolved itself in September 1991.
