Congress of People's Deputies of Russia

1990–1993 · 20th century · Also known as Congress of People's Deputies of the RSFSR

The Congress of People's Deputies of Russia was the highest legislative body of the Russian SFSR and then the Russian Federation from 1990 to 1993. Elected in March 1990 in the republic's first competitive elections, it chose Boris Yeltsin as chairman of its Supreme Soviet and adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty on 12 June 1990. Yeltsin's decree dissolving it in September 1993 led to a violent constitutional crisis.
