Cypselus

c. 657–627 BCE · 7th century BCE

Cypselus was the first tyrant of Corinth, ruling from about 657 to 627 BCE after overthrowing the aristocratic Bacchiad clan. He and his son Periander, of the Cypselid dynasty, founded colonies in north-western Greece, including Ambracia, Leucas and Anactorium, governed by members of the family. The dynasty fell soon after Periander's death, around 585 BCE.
