Daniele Manin

1804–1857 · 19th century

Daniele Manin was a Venetian lawyer and patriot who led the Republic of San Marco in 1848–1849. Freed from Austrian imprisonment by crowds in March 1848, he proclaimed the republic and as its president organised the city's defence. Venice held out under siege, bombardment and cholera until August 1849, after which Manin went into exile in Paris and backed Italian unification under Piedmont.
