Daulat Rao Scindia was the Maharaja of Gwalior from 1794 to 1827, successor of Mahadji Scindia as head of the Scindia family in the Maratha Confederacy. Defeated by the British at Assaye and Laswari in the Second Anglo-Maratha War, he ceded territory by the Treaty of Surji-Anjangaon in 1803. He later settled his army camp, the Lashkar, at Gwalior, which became the state's capital.
