Der Spiegel

1947 · 20th century

Der Spiegel is a German weekly news magazine founded in Hanover in 1947 and published in Hamburg since 1952, led for decades by Rudolf Augstein. Known for investigative journalism, it was at the centre of the Spiegel affair of 1962, when its offices were searched and editors arrested over a report on West German defences. The resulting outcry strengthened press freedom in the Federal Republic.
