1806 · 19th century

The dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire took place in 1806, when Emperor Francis II abdicated the imperial title following Napoleon's victories and the creation of the Confederation of the Rhine. It brought an end to an institution that had existed for about a thousand years and opened the way to the reorganisation of the German lands.
