Druk Desi
The Druk Desi was the civil ruler of Bhutan under the dual system of government created by Ngawang Namgyal, the Zhabdrung, in the seventeenth century, while the Je Khenpo headed the monastic body. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the office was often fought over by the regional governors (penlops). It was abolished in 1907, when Ugyen Wangchuck became hereditary king.
