Duris of Samos

c. 350–after 281 BCE · 4th century BCE

Duris of Samos was a Greek historian and tyrant of his native island in the early third century BCE. He wrote histories of Macedon and Greece from 370 BCE, a history of Agathocles of Syracuse and works on Samos, all now lost except in fragments. Ancient critics noted his dramatic, emotional style, and he is often seen as a leading example of 'tragic history'.
