1288–1339 · 14th century · Also known as Go-Daigo

Emperor Go-Daigo of Japan reigned from 1318 and plotted to overthrow the Kamakura shogunate. Exiled to the Oki islands, he escaped, and in 1333 his supporters destroyed the Hōjō regime, opening the Kenmu Restoration of direct imperial rule. Ashikaga Takauji turned against him in 1336, and he set up the Southern Court at Yoshino.
