Kyoto

Kyoto is a city in central Japan that served as the imperial capital for over a thousand years. During the Tokugawa Shogunate the emperor and court remained in Kyoto, while real political power lay with the shogun in Edo. The shogunate supervised the court closely, and the city remained a major cultural and craft centre.
