Buke shohatto

Also known as Laws for Military Houses

The Buke shohatto, or Laws for Military Houses, were regulations issued by the Tokugawa shogunate, first in 1615 and revised several times later, to govern the conduct of the daimyo and samurai. They controlled castle building, marriages between domains and other activities. The laws were a central instrument of shogunal control over the roughly 260 domains of the Tokugawa Shogunate.
