Hayashi Razan

1583–1657 · 17th century

Hayashi Razan was a Japanese Neo-Confucian scholar who served the first four Tokugawa shoguns as adviser and drafter of documents. A follower of the teachings of Zhu Xi, he promoted a philosophy of hierarchical social order and loyalty that suited the new regime. The private academy he founded in Edo in 1630 became, under his descendants, the official shogunal school, the Shōheikō.
