Hayat Tahrir al-Sham
Hayat Tahrir al-Sham was a Sunni Islamist armed group in the Syrian civil war, formed in 2017 from the former al-Nusra Front, once al-Qaeda's Syrian branch, and other factions. Led by Abu Mohammad al-Julani (Ahmed al-Sharaa), it governed much of Idlib province. In late 2024 it led the offensive that took Damascus and toppled Bashar al-Assad, and it was dissolved into the new state in 2025.
