Golan Heights
The Golan Heights is a basalt plateau in the Levant between the Sea of Galilee and Mount Hermon. In antiquity it held the Aramaean kingdoms of Geshur and Maacah, and later Ghassanid camps such as Jabiyah. Part of Syria after 1946, most of it was occupied by Israel in 1967 and annexed in 1981, a step not recognised by most of the world.
