Hama

Hama is a city on the Orontes river in western Syria, famous for its great wooden water wheels, the norias. As Hamath it was the capital of an Iron Age kingdom until Sargon II annexed it in 720 BCE, and in the Middle Ages it was ruled by a branch of the Ayyubid dynasty, including the historian-prince Abu al-Fida. In 1982 the Syrian government crushed an uprising there, killing thousands.
