Battle of Ain Jalut

1260 · 13th century · Also known as Ain Jalut · Part of the Mongol invasions of the Levant

The Battle of Ain Jalut was fought in 1260 in Palestine between the Mamluk Sultanate and a Mongol army of the Ilkhanate. The Mamluks under Qutuz and Baybars won, halting the Mongol advance into Egypt. It followed the Mongol destruction of the Ayyubid principalities in Syria and confirmed the Mamluks as the dominant power in the region.
