Battle of Agnadello

1509 · 16th century · Also known as Battle of Vailà · Part of the War of the League of Cambrai

The Battle of Agnadello was fought on 14 May 1509 in Lombardy, when the French army of Louis XII routed the Venetian army. Coming early in the War of the League of Cambrai, it cost Venice almost all of its mainland territories within weeks. Diplomacy and the divisions among its enemies allowed the republic to recover most of the Terraferma by 1517, but its expansion in Italy was over.
