Bartolomeo Colleoni

c. 1395–1475 · 15th century

Bartolomeo Colleoni was an Italian condottiere from Bergamo who served both Venice and Milan before becoming captain-general of the Venetian army for life in 1455. He left much of his fortune to the republic on condition that a statue of him be raised in Venice. The bronze equestrian monument by Andrea del Verrocchio, outside the church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo, is one of the masterpieces of Renaissance sculpture.
