Asakura clan domain

1471 CE – 1573 CE (approx.) · capital Ichijodani

The domain of the Asakura lords of Echizen, whose castle town of Ichijodani was a cultural centre until Oda Nobunaga destroyed it in 1573.

Origins

Asakura Toshikage, a retainer of the Shiba governors of Echizen, used the Onin War to take control of the province, seizing power from his masters around 1471. He built his seat in the narrow valley of Ichijodani.

Rule and society

Toshikage is credited with an early house code that urged merit over birth and ordered vassals to live in the castle town. Five generations of Asakura made Ichijodani a prosperous town that welcomed refugee courtiers, poets and scholars from war-torn Kyoto. The domain remained largely stable while neighbouring provinces fell into chaos.

Decline and legacy

Asakura Yoshikage sheltered the future shogun Ashikaga Yoshiaki and allied with the Azai against Oda Nobunaga. After defeat at Anegawa in 1570, Nobunaga invaded in 1573, burned Ichijodani and forced Yoshikage to kill himself. Its excavated streets are now a historic site.
