Ernest of Bavaria

1554–1612 · 16th century

Ernest of Bavaria was a Wittelsbach prince and churchman who became prince-bishop of Liège in 1581 and archbishop-elector of Cologne in 1583, along with several other sees. His election began over a century of Bavarian rule in Liège, and his victory in the Cologne War secured the electorate for Catholicism.
