Ernest Renan

1823–1892 · 19th century

Ernest Renan was a French scholar of Semitic languages, historian of religion and essayist. In 1860–1861 he led a French archaeological mission to Lebanon that explored Byblos, Tyre and Sidon, published as Mission de Phénicie. His Life of Jesus of 1863 caused a sensation by treating Jesus as a historical man, and his lecture What Is a Nation? of 1882 remains a classic text on nationhood.
