Erythraean Sibyl

Also known as Sibyl of Erythrae

The Erythraean Sibyl was a legendary prophetess of Apollo associated with Erythrae, an Ionian city on the coast of Asia Minor opposite Chios. Ancient writers counted her among the most famous of the sibyls, and verses ascribed to her circulated widely. Christian writers later read her prophecies as foretelling Christ, and Michelangelo painted her on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
