Euripus Strait

The Euripus is the narrow strait between the island of Euboea and mainland Greece, only about 40 metres wide at Chalcis. It is famous for its strong tidal currents, which reverse direction several times a day and puzzled ancient writers. The first bridge across it was built in 411 BCE, and Chalcis grew rich from controlling the crossing.
