Expulsion of the Salzburg Protestants

1731–1732 · 18th century

The expulsion of the Salzburg Protestants was the forced emigration of some 20,000 Lutherans from the Archbishopric of Salzburg, ordered by Archbishop Leopold Anton von Firmian in his edict of 1731. Most were welcomed by King Frederick William I of Prussia, who settled them in East Prussia to repopulate lands devastated by plague.
