Salzburg
Salzburg is a city in western Austria on the Salzach river, near the German border. On the site of the Roman town of Iuvavum, Saint Rupert founded a monastery around 700, and the see became an archbishopric in 798, whose prince-archbishops ruled an independent state enriched by salt mining until 1803. Its baroque cathedral and old town are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it was the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
