Salzkammergut

The Salzkammergut is an Alpine lake district in Upper Austria, Styria and Salzburg, named after the salt mines and the Habsburg chamber that administered them. Salt had been mined at Hallstatt since prehistoric times, and under the Habsburgs the region was a closely controlled crown estate whose output was a major source of revenue. Hallstatt and its surroundings are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
