Idrija
Idrija is a town in western Slovenia, the site of one of the world's largest mercury mines, discovered around 1490 and worked for some five centuries. Under the Habsburgs from 1509 it was a major source of royal revenue, and its mercury was used in Spanish America to refine silver by amalgamation. The mine closed in the 1990s, and together with Almadén in Spain it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
