Jáchymov

Also known as Joachimsthal

Jáchymov, in German Joachimsthal, is a town in the Ore Mountains of north-western Czechia, founded after rich silver deposits were found there in 1516. The Counts Schlick minted large silver coins there from 1520, the Joachimsthaler, whose name, shortened to thaler, gave rise to the word dollar. Later its uranium ores yielded the radium isolated by Marie Curie, and under communism prisoners were forced to mine uranium there.
