Faroald I of Spoleto

d. c. 591 · 6th century

Faroald I was the first Lombard Duke of Spoleto, ruling from around 570 until about 591. Soon after the Lombard invasion of Italy he seized Spoleto in the Umbrian Apennines and raided Byzantine territory, briefly taking the port of Classe near Ravenna. His duchy, cutting the route between Rome and Ravenna, became one of the most powerful and independent Lombard duchies.
