Abruzzo is a region of central Italy between the Apennines and the Adriatic Sea, with its capital at L'Aquila. Its mountains include the Gran Sasso, the highest peak of the Apennines, and the Majella. In antiquity it was home to Italic peoples such as the Vestini, Marsi, Paeligni and Marrucini, and in the Middle Ages it formed part of the Kingdom of Naples.
