Federalism

Also known as federalisation, federal autonomy

Federalism is a system of government in which power is divided between a central authority and constituent units. Proposals to federalise the Austro-Hungarian Empire were discussed as a way to satisfy its many nationalities but were never carried out. The term is also used to describe the substantial local autonomy that cities and provinces enjoyed within the Roman Empire.
