Fort de la Roche

c. 1640 · 17th century

Fort de la Roche was a stronghold built around 1640 by the Huguenot engineer Jean Le Vasseur on a rock above the harbour of Tortuga, off northern Hispaniola. Reached by an iron ladder and armed with cannon, it let the French hold the island against Spanish attack, repelling an assault in 1643, and made Tortuga a secure base for buccaneers. Spanish forces captured it in 1654.
