Fort Maurepas

1699 · 17th century · Also known as Old Biloxi

Fort Maurepas was a French fort built in 1699 by Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville on the eastern shore of Biloxi Bay, at present-day Ocean Springs, Mississippi. It was the first seat of the French colony of Louisiana and the base for exploring the lower Mississippi. The colony's headquarters moved to Mobile in 1702, and the fort was soon abandoned.
