Fort Manuel

1503 · 16th century

Fort Manuel was the first European fort in India, built by the Portuguese at Kochi on the Malabar Coast in 1503 with the permission of the ruler of Cochin. Named after King Manuel I of Portugal, it protected the Portuguese trading post and Cochin itself against the Zamorin of Calicut. Little of it survives today.
