Fort Lovrijenac
Fort Lovrijenac (St Lawrence) is a fortress standing on a sea cliff 37 metres high just outside the western walls of Dubrovnik. Built in the Middle Ages and strengthened in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, it guarded the city's western approaches by land and sea against Venice. Its gate bears the inscription Non bene pro toto libertas venditur auro, meaning that freedom is not to be sold for all the gold in the world.
