Fort Jesus

1593–1596 · 16th century

Fort Jesus is a fortress built by the Portuguese at Mombasa between 1593 and 1596 to guard their trade on the Swahili coast. Designed by the Italian architect Giovanni Battista Cairati, it changed hands repeatedly: Omani forces of the Ya'ariba dynasty took it in 1698 after a siege of nearly three years, and it later served the Mazrui governors of Mombasa. It is now a museum and a World Heritage Site.
