Periyar River
The Periyar is the longest river of Kerala, in south-western India, flowing about 244 kilometres from the Western Ghats to the Arabian Sea. A great flood in 1341 is said to have silted up the old port of Muziris near its mouth and opened a new harbour at Kochi, which then grew into the region's main port. Its waters feed the Idukki and Mullaperiyar dams.
